Denise’s nature oriented ceramic art ranges from finely
detailed wall pieces to five foot free standing sculptures.
Each is richly worked with intriguing textures that reveal the
sensitive hand of the artist. Originally from Erie, PA,
Denise received her BFA from Columbus College of Art &
Design, Columbus, Ohio and MFA from Ohio State
University. She has been exhibiting her work since 1978,
has participated in national and international shows and
won numerous awards. Her sculptures can be found in
many businesses and private homes throughout the
country. Currently Denise teaches sculpture at the
Cultural Arts Center, Columbus, Ohio.
Artist's Statement..
Human, plant, or animal… in nature we are all entwined. I continue to draw on the vitality of the natural world to give life to
my sculptures. The abundant textures, shapes, and colors translated from nature become original compositions in clay.
Narrative, symbolic, or decorative, these pieces bring to mind the raw materials of trees, plants, earth, and water. At the
same time they can be mediums of emotional expression. My concern for shrinking habitats such as rain forests and
wetlands, and the effect this has on humans and animals is a recurring theme in my art.
