The title “Nature’s Hybrids” can have many
connotations. I interpret it with some artistic
license as the result of crossing different
living species, or perhaps a species and a
concept. Or maybe it’s some magical
combination that happens as in a dream,
triggered by an observation, or a story.
Current events that give meaning to words
such as biodiversity, genetic engineering,
and hybrids conjure up a mixed vision of
nature and science. Individual aspects of
these subjects became interesting to me, not
as literal studies, but as odd bits of
information that began to germinate into
different images in my mind. Sometimes
making a serious statement, other times
whimsical, they brought up unexpected or
“hybridized” plant or seed-like forms, some
with human or animal influence.
Evolving out of a love for the outdoors and the
challenging pleasure of the
creative process, my sculptures reflect the
shapes and textures abundant in
our natural environments. I like the idea that
clay itself is part of that environment and I feel
an affinity to the Native American belief that
all natural things have a spirit and they
deserve our honor and respect.
